According to the National Education Association approximately 5.3 million public school students are English language learners. English Language Learners (ELL) are the fastest-growing student population group. The NEA Policy Brief, states that by 2025 nearly 25 percent of students in public schools will be English Language Learners. With such a dramatic increase, it is necessary that educators in all areas understand and address the struggles of ELL students. Teaching reading to children in itself is a complicated process. However, the process of learning to read can be particularly challenging for English Language Learners, especially if they have little or no formal schooling and if they have not learned to read in their native language. Through this course you will learn a variety of instructional strategies and ways to best support and engage the reading struggles of the ELL’s in your educational environment. This course is open to Pre-K - 12 teachers, reading teachers, ELL teachers, support staff, and special education teachers.
