Reading and Writing Mathematics
3 In-service Credits/ 45 Hours Instructor: Ryan Donovan March 1-30
Have you ever heard someone say, “I’m just not good at math”? Many people believe that math is something you are either good at or not. I believe that you are able to accomplish anything you put your mind to. This is a mental hurdle that several people have to get over before even attempting a math curriculum. Research shows that some people tend to think more mathematically than others but just like any exercise, natural ability does not always determine the outcome. In this course we will learn to look at various math courses with a different perspective, using skills other than math to help us work through math curriculum in general and problem solving. We will create valuable resources to use in the classroom, develop lessons that incorporate literacy into the math classroom, and most importantly discover new methods to help our students become comfortable and capable in the “math” atmosphere. This course is appropriate for elementary teachers, secondary math, and special education teachers.
