Childhood and Adolescent Depression

When working with today’s children and adolescents, it is important to be able to understand what depression looks like in our students and what supports we have available. According to the American Family Physician, depression among children and adolescents is common but frequently unrecognized. Suicide has become a growing public health concern as successive generations have shown a parallel increase of suicide and depression in the pediatric age group.” Participants in this course will develop a general understanding of depression and how it affects the lives of our youth. Topics include risk factors, causes, diagnosis and treatment. This course will delve into instructing, assessing and adapting lessons for the student with depression. Participants will review behavior management, anti-bullying plans, as well as review current research. It is important for all areas of instruction to meet the needs of your diverse student population such as ELA, Social Studies, Math, Science, LOTE, ESL, Special Education, Guidance Counselors, the Arts, and Physical Education, N-12 are appropriate for this course. Common Core Learning Standards are addressed.
